Many residents on Duck Woods Drive in Southern Shores are not leaving anything to chance when it comes to letting other voters know whom they support in the November 3rd municipal election. Current Mayor, Don Smith recently alienated many street residents when he pushed to have Southern Shores' canal dredge spoils dumped on civic association properties at the entrance of the 1.5 mile, dead end street. A sign, placed near Smith's election sign at the entrance of the street, apparently intends to remind voters not to forget that matter.
Brian McDonald is the only other member of the town council up for re-election. Many pro-Hal Denny supporters see McDonald as too closely aligned with Smith. This could cost McDonald many votes, and possibly the election, as George Kowalski, former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the town's fire department, and a long time community leader/worker has offered himself as a "write-in candidate" against McDonald. His campaign signs are beginning to appear through-out the town today.
