(originally proposed as a senior center)
EOD makes no public judgment on the exquisitiveness of this facility, other than to say, "we were dumbfounded."
But, hey folks, admission is free(?). Why not go there and enjoy yourselves.
And, be sure to try out that mighty fine $5,000 pool table and sign up for the upcoming billiards tournament.
But, before you make the drive down Marshall Collins Drive...click on the slideshow in the above right-hand corner of this blog and sit back and take a small guided tour...
And, if you folks on the northern beaches decide to cancel your membership in the golfing country clubs and burn down the Baum Center, we'll understand. Likewise, for the folks at the Fessenden Center down on Hatteras Island. (double-click on and enlarge the slideshow for a full-screen view)

WOW!!!
When will one like that be coming to my neihborhood. I don't play pool but I might learn with a table like that and I might start exercising if we had equipment like that in my neighborhood.
Say, that "justice center" looks like it was designed by Albert Speer...
I wonder why our two local newspapers refuse to report on the waste and corruption of Dare County government? Are they too scared?
Uncle Jack sure picked the wrong time to move to Bawlmer. We don't have anything like the Dare Community Center up here. Where do y'all get all that money?
Uncle Jack, the money is from the backs of County Employees and resident taxes.
That place is nice. I've been taking pilates classes since the Center opened. I can't afford the Y. What is so wrong about the county offering a service for the average person to enjoy? There are technolgy classes, arts and crafts, community dinners, day trips, blood drives, etc. I view the Dare County Center as a gift, and I am truly thankful for it. The rest of the county aleady had the Fessenden Center and the Baum Center. Mid county folks deserve the same. I highly encourage everyone who might read this to visit the Center and participate in some of their wonderful offerings.
We love you and respect your views, Sarah D., but have to ask; do you think the county stands ready, financially or otherwise, to establish indentical center in other parts of the beaches? The county did exactly that with the schools, via $135 million spending program, all brought about by jealous communities. This center, originally sought as a simple Senior Citizens Center, evolved in the same way...over zealous people wanting the best of the best. As a result, the facility in no way resembles a senior citizens center; and chances are many seniors will shy away for the same reason they don't join the Y. When the original pleas was made, everyone thought "seniors" needed a place of their own, not some place where sweaty yuppies worked out on expensive exercise machines and middle-age mothers took yoga classes. As you continue your visits to the center, let us know the percentage of "senior" you see there, reading book, playing bridge, visiting with each other, etc. We hope it catches on for them, long after those machines get rusty and the pool balls get lost..
Sarah D, We invite you to Buxton to come tour the Fessenden Center.
Oops! You won't be able to get in! There was a fire weeks ago, and it's still not opened! There you will find an indoor basketball court, an open exercise room which contains no exercise equipment except maybe some of yoga mats, and it is shared with a pool table which I think was used when it was put in. The kitchen is the size of your average home kitchen with basic bare bones appliances. I don't even think it has a dishwasher.
My point is not jealously over what the other residents in Dare County have, my point is this:
In this economy, when we have people who are out of work and hungry, do we really need to spend these kinds of tax dollars?
I agree with Sarah D. Its about time us non-senior people got something for the tax $ we pay. I think the property should be able to be utilized by ALL county residents. Since they built it on currently owned County land (next to govt center) it is centrally located. While I feel for Hatteras island, they have to realize they did chose to live in a remote area. They also just got a very nice county office building too so to act like they don't get teh same is absurd IMO. I only wish I had more time to drive over to Manteo and use it.Wish they built this where the Baum Center is, I'd love it!
First of all let me say I am not a Hatteras Island resident. However, I feel the last poster is implying that Hatteras Island residents do not derserve the same benefits or services as northern Dare residents. How is the new office complex a benefit to the residents there? It only benefits the county employees that were previously working in dumps. I think this poster is missing the entire point of this blog. The Dare County board is needlessly wasting tax payer monies during tough economic times. The board claims they have to cut employee benefits because of the economy and then turn around and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on un-needed luxeries.
What about those businesses that offer the same things as this "community center". is the county trying to put them out of business by offering this free place? (i know we paid for it with taxes) How can the Y, Cross Fit, and OBX sports club compete with a free place? if those places go out of business that is less tax revenue.
Isn't that the main purpose of the Democrat, I mean Liberal, I mean Progressive Agenda? Kill Capitalism and make it fair and easy for all?
I agree with the last poster. The county should not be in the business of providing free workout facilities. There is the Elizabethan for Manteo residents. YMCA, OBX Powersports, Crossfit OBX and Barrier Island for the beach residents.
