Thumbing Noses

Is Dare County Commissioner Warren Judge thumbing his nose at the Dare County Shoreline Commission?
Following the appearance of Nags Head Mayor Bob Oakes at today's board of commissioner's meeting, Judge appointed himself, along with Commissioners Jack Shea and Allen Burrus to be "liaisons" for the board in dealing with Nags Head regarding their request(s) for $20 million and other taxes for their beach nourishment project.

We have to ask Chairman Judge why he didn't think that the Shoreline Commission, with 6 municipal leaders and Commissioners Mike Johnson and Richard Johnson, as members, weren't good enough to be those "liaisons"?

It is our understanding that it took some "urging from some members" to get Judge to call tomorrow's meeting of the Shoreline Commission at 3:00 pm. in the Kill Devil Hills Town Hall.

Our advice to the 6 mayors is..."Now is the time to speak up ....or forever hold your peace. In our opinion someone is trying to ride slipshod all over you."

That is just standing operating procedures in Dare County I would guess the commissioners just see it as politics. If you’re a county or state employee expect threats and retributions if you don’t follow orders or do as your told even when it is contrary to your job description and training. The long bridge vs short bridge to HI is a good example. If you’re making money here I suspect you’re already in the right club.

It appears that Commissioner Judge is looking for any opportunity possible for exposure and a picture and/or writeup in the Coastland Times, whethere it be kissing babies or lambasting all environmental groups, praising the off road vehicle peoples for pushing their agenda and criticizing (with a smile)the NPS for whatever action they take. (remember Commissioner Judge you agreed to the consent plan

The answer to the question is YES!

But yet if you watch the video of the meeting, provided here ( http://www.darenc.com/video/view.php?id=27 ), what you have written isn't quite accurate, is it? Best to see it for yourself than to go on hearsay.

EOD did not write this blogpost, based upon hearsay. Rather, we had our computer audio on the entire meeting. We have to agree, Russ, perhaps you are arguing a matter of semantics here. Best to have gone on to later in the meeting when Judge (acting as an appointed liaison) took it upon himself to appoint Shea and Burrus to assist him in dealing with Nags Head. Anyone who has followed this issue for long knows beach nourishment is Judge's baby and he has been carrying it for over ten years. He has never excluded himself from participation in any facet of it;and, in fact has always been present on each and every decision/event pertaining to the matter. Yes, EOD thinks Judge has thumbed his nose at the Shoreline Commission and has done an injustice to its mission by not having it meet more. And, much of this criticism should also go to the other two sitting members from the county board. We rest our case on the verbage use in Monday's meeting.
Incidentally, after yesterday's Shoreline Commission meeting, in which EOD made a plea for more meetings, backed by Mayor Buske, Judge chimed in and said, "we will go back to meeting on a monthly basis." Thanks, Commissioner Judge.
