Lastly, are adjustments in employee benefits, made by the Dare County Board of Commissioners for the current budget year. Whether those reduced benefits will be reinstated in the coming budget year is not known at this time.
Readers of this data should keep in mind that salary ranges for the listed positions were not obtained by EOD; although we believe most of these supervisory personnel are at or near the top of their respective pay grades.
For the record, the UNC School of Government does an annual survey of all 100 counties each year, asking for complete data on employee salaries and benefits. Dare County was one of 4 in the state who did not complete the survey for the year 2010. Information on other counties can be seen here.

In the last attachment of cut benefits/budgets it looks like the Poor Sheriff's Office took a bad whipping! Could it be the county commissioners exercising their only control over that department? They can't flex their muscle in the operations of that area.
It amazes me they cut career development to save only $74,004 to save money. But yet they can fund a stupid dog/skate park. Ray, could you please ask the county commissioners whey the deputies have not had a salary study performed since 2001 and why they were excluded from the 2005 salary study?
I understand last year's budget cuts were 5% across the board with all County Departments, except the Sheriff's Office... which was over 11% ???

I followed the link to the NC school of government site and compared the Dare county manager salary with other counties. According to the NC school of government Mecklenburg County has an estimated population in 2009 of 902,803 and the manager makes $215,656 + $12,149 travel. Dare County has an estimated population in 2009 of 32,000 and the manager makes $200,779! That is only $27,026 less than a county that has 870,803 more people living in it.
One perplexing question about the list, if I may.
Just what services does the County Dentist provide at such a plush salary since, as far as I know, there are no public dental services provided?
It is my understanding the county dentist serves the school children. I believe he/she operates out of mobile unit
