Uncle Jack's Baltimore Blog

EOD is sure there aren't many folks here on the Outer Banks who don't know Jack Sandberg,
a.k.a. "Uncle Jack".  Jack and his wife have moved from South Nags Head to Baltimore, MD to be nearer their daughter.
However, we are pleased that he stays in touch.  It's comforting to know that Jack still has a great, serious and humorous, love for the Outer Banks. He still owns his home in South Nags Head, and he has seen more sand come and go over the years down there than most folks.  In fact, he has just written some notes about it in his Uncle Jack's Baltimore Blog.  We say, "right on", Jack.

so what you think is that if they would have done nothing they would be where they are now. i don't think that is true. the sand left but it did protect some thing for a little while. you don't seem to want to spend any money for anything. keep the beaches closed on the island, why not, its a waste of money to fight." give someone an incentive to retire and save money in the future,"crazy!" you must be on the payroll and you must get incentives to spend less.
your devils advocate play is lame, stand up and be a man.

Chad -- there will always be a beach -- a beautiful beach. What will not always be there are the homes on the beach. That is the RISK the oceanfront homeowner buys. Go to the NC Aquarium and you'll see their demonstration of how the beaches evolve. I saw this decades ago at the aquarium. Every potential oceanfront homeowner should be required to see this before signing sales contracts, and then be required to sign paperwork that they know what happens to beaches, so we are in the conversation we are having now.

EOD:

I am anxiously awaiting any comments from Mr. Brockway on UJ's blog.

buy cheap, sell high ... thanks to the self interests of people like Dare Commissioner Judge Mr. Brockway will probably be laughing all the way to the bank!

Sparky,
I am sure Jack respects your views.
And, it's good to see your rentals are going well this summer.

thank you eod, i appreciate the sentiment. rentals are going well only after rebuilding after the veterans day nor'easter. in the rebuilding process we used local contractors jeff k. emanuelson and dad, mr. sandman (gerry creef a fellow crabber) dune home services,r.a. hoy, reliant electrical services, jeff riddick and co, and construction engineering services. out of town oceanfront homeowners due help the economy a little bit.

Mr. Brockway,

"uncle jack and i have had a cup of coffee or two on my deck and have had the discussion about beach nourishment civilly. i respect his opinion and i hope he respects mine"

I think the poster wanted to know what you thought of UJ's comments on beach nourishment, not what you thought of UJ.

i am pro beach nourishment. i am also willing to pay my fare share or what the county and town executives would like me to pay. i beleive the plan will work but i do not guarantee anything. if all the sand is gone in two years like rays says i will seriously have to rethink my position. however if the sand remains for 5-7 years i will gladly pay my fare share and if that means doubling, tripling or quadrupling my real estate taxes, so be it.

Say what?

you "will gladly pay my fare share and if that means doubling, tripling or quadrupling my real estate taxes, so be it."

You are obviously one of those out of town folks (New York City?) who has lots of bucks and of course would be one of the first to start screaming, yelling and stamping your feet if your taxes were raised.

Lets get into the real world, you have no intention of paying your "fair share" and want the people who live in and have property in Dare County who do not have the luxury of the big bucks like you to pay for this foolishness.

let's look at the facts. i own a three bedroom home on the oceanfront in south nags head with approx. 50-60' of frontage, my town taxes for the year are 683.09. i am sorry to say i do not have big bucks but those tax rates are extremely low. you can travel up and down the east coast i do not think you will find oceanfront property with a lower tax rate. that is why i can afford tripling the tax rate.

That sand they put down won't even last a single winter, and everyone who lives here in the winter knows it.

This is not Florida. We have real storms. Lots of them, and they beat us for days with NE winds and 15-foot surges.

The first storm we have, you can bet there will be a line of locals down there just watching the surf top the new sand, saturate it, and whisk it away. It's going to be quiet a sight.

I fully plan to wear my new shirt, which has a picture of Bob O's and/or Warren Judge's face with the quote "I Killed Nags Head."

Tripling the tax rate? You've got to be kidding. From the sounds of it you are not a local, and I'm glad about that since you will not be able to cast a vote on wasting the money of the locals.
