Both candidates for the Dare County Commissioner at-large seat, Robin Mann and Jack Shea have dedicated websites promoting themselves for election. In addition, Mann and Shea have "Elect Me" Facebook pages. In Mann's case, she also has a personal Facebook page. EOD is a member of Facebook .
Neither Mann or Shea's website pages are setup to enable open two way dialogue between the candidate and prospective voter. However, currently, Mann does engage in two way conversation (posting) with Facebook members on her Elect Robin Mann page.
Concurrent with the above, EOD wrote Mann and asked her several questions, the answers to which were not available on any of her Internet pages. EOD asked Mann her opinion on an aspect of beach nourishment, terminal groins along our beach and her opinion about a required redesign of Dare County voting districts following the 2010 census. Mann removed the questions from the site without reply or reason, until EOD inquired and was told "read my website." The website, of course, did not contain the answers.
Adding insult to injury, a Mann supporter and well known "political groupie" here on the Outer Banks wrote and told EOD his questions should not be posted on the website. Go figure?
EOD wrote Mann a personal email seeking answers. The reply he received stated,
"Ray, I think the best thing for us to do is speak about the questions on the telephone. I have a full schedule this week with meetings, etc. How about next week?
Right now, EOD's vote is still up for grabs. How about yours?

Neither my wife nor I would ever vote for her unless she answers those questions publicly.
How she is going to vote on those critical matters goes to the root of whether she is representing us or herself (like many current Commish's are doing)
Not because of this, but for other reasons, I am switching my vote from Mann back to Shea.
I really think he is doing an OK job. The current atmosphere of "remove all incumbents" is out of whack.
Shea is the least of our worries on the Board; it's just a shame none of the rest of us feel like wading into the muck to run against any of the others Board members...
I, too, was intending to support Robyn. But if she is unwilling to answer questions important to the County -- questions that she will have to deal with once she is elected-- than I'll have to change my mind. Apparently she WANTS to be part of the Good Ole' Boy network !
And by the way -- she NO LONGER engages in two-way converation on her Elect Robyn Mann Facebook page !
Yep...there are sooooo many reasons why none of the rest of us want to wade into that muck! You either kow-tow to the GON or you don't get elected!
PLUS, how many of us don't have one or two questionable things in our past? We were younguns running amok at the beach! Of course some of us got into a little trouble...drank a few too many beers...danced a little wildly at Atlantis back in the day. And if a person runs for any office, all that old dirt gets dug up and it becomes a mudsling-fest instead of a candidacy for office by a grown-up law-abiding citizen who doesn't want their old laundry rehashed for the whole public to see.
Sad.
So we therefore get either holier-than-thous, GOBs with money and connections, or newcomers running for office.
Those of us who have known Robin for a long time know that she wants things done by her rules only.
Already it seems she has forgotten who she will be working for as a commussioner.
Jack Shea is one of the commissioner who had made any helpful proposals. I hate to see him replaced by someone who will not engage with the voters.
I initially was going to support Mann over Shea, but after hearing things about her, I have decided to support Shea. However, as a county employee, county resident, and property owner, I feel like Shea has done nothing for me. He got elected and has done nothing other than go along with the other board members. We need a candidate who has the good of the community in their heart, not the good of their personal wallet.
Found it, she's definitely a pump sand on the beach supporter. Is FOR Beach Nourishment all the way, it's on her site, looks like it just got added.
Lost my vote. And my neighbors' too, they are all 100% against BN.
I can usually figure out what an acronym stands for, but for the life of me, I don't know what GON stands for. Help me!
Mann already seems like another candidate that is just to good to be bothered by a few questions from the people. She cant take a few minutes to post her answers? We dont need anyone like this in office. We are trying to get rid of office holders like this. BYE BYE ROBIN!
Robin is working a40 plus work week and campain i am sure she will anwser all questions asap , all questions cant be quick anwers.there is lots of time to here her real anwers publicly!!
Sorry, Anon, that dog won't hunt.
Mann's was not a "I need more time to answer you" kind of response. The questions were deleted and a "read my website" reply was given. She shot herself in the foot and it needs to heal. Plain and simple.
Here are several other questions for Mann to consider:
1. Where does she stand on tanning salons facing higher taxes under Obama’s new tax policy? (just kidding, but they do get taxed more)
2. When working on the Manns Harbor zoning why did she help draft zoning that limits other boat builders from building a facility the same size and height as hers?
3. Why was she so vocal against private property rights of a property owner in Mashoes wanting to build two 800 sq ft cabins on 10 acres of land and categorizing this hunt camp as high density?
4. If she is working 40 plus work weeks, how is she going to be able to meet the needs of Dare County citizens?
5. What will she do differently than Shea (other than saying she is a Democrat)?
The list goes on. In closing she stepped all over the private property rights of the owner of the former Manns Harbor Marina working to prevent him from developing single family residences at the site, working against him from developing a marina/boat storage, and every other use he proposed. Before the developer cleaned up that property it was littered with drug dealing, rooms for rent by the hour, prostitution, domestic violence, etc (check the police reports). In the end she worked to have the state of North Carolina purchase the property for above appraised value. This kind of spending and these kinds of actions against property owners must be understood before casting ones vote.
Sorry...I meant GOBN (good ol' boy network)!
My error. Gave myself a good chuckle there, though...hope the same for you!
This blog is some of the bet entertainment I get all day. Nice to get some fun amongst the dead-serious.
I have to laugh when I watch the DCBC meetings on TV. Mrs. Mann sits behind the podium so she will be visible behind the speakers. She looks at herself on the monitors, smiles and adjusts her clothing and hair.
The beach nourishment question is very easy to answer. Take notice how "tight" she is with Warren Judge. Not to mention her father-in-law owns a sizeable lot and house in South Nags Head.
Redistricting - I know she would like to be the 3rd commissioner from the RI/Mainland District.
In response to Anon #13 post, here are a few thoughts.
Concerning the Manns Harbor zoning issue - the limit on height etc. for other boat building shops - that's easy to answer. Limit competition, control and greed.
Concerning the Mashoes property owner's zoning issue - Mrs. Manns husband and the property owner had a "falling out" years ago over hunting and business issues. Again, greed and control.
The Manns Harbor Marina property -She didn't want homes or condos or anything built there that would obstruct her view of the sunset from her nice, spacious home on the Croatan Sound. Control and greed. After all, it is MANNS Harbor.
I too had every intention of voting for Robin Mann. This is most disappointing indeed!
I'm not a big Shea fan, so I guess my vote is still up for grabs...
Please remember that Jack Shea was the ONLY one to vote against the tax increase in Dare Cty,(Tilett just didn't like what the extra cash was going to be used for) even the so-called Republicans on the board voted for it. So unless you don't mind giving the GOBN more of your money to waste, VOTE FOR JACK SHEA!
As a registered Democrat I will vote for Shea also. After reading all this about Mann this is very disappointing. I've also heard through the boat building industry she has worked very hard to change laws after the fact - after her and her husbands' business has benefited so I believe the earlier poster. We have enough of these kinds of politics already. We need more folks like shea who are truly looking out for the people and not their interests or family/friends' interests. Unfortunately, having 1 candidate change isnt going to change much onj that board... too many lifers. We'd need at least 3-4 people to replace Judge, R Johnson, Tillet and M Johnson if you ask me.
