Crazy on the Beach

The four wheel drive area north of Corolla was a buzz the day after Hurricane Earl passed by the Outer Banks.  And, chances are it will remain hectic up there for the Labor Day week.

Visitors had staked out this section of the beach and placed interesting signs along side their vehicle.
It sort of reminded  EOD of the "Baby on Board" bumper sticker we see on the back of some cars.

Still, traffic up there does cause all kinds of problems, as attested by the fact there was an abundance of law enforcement officials on the beach. "I'm sure we'll write plenty of speeding tickets on the beach today," said one official.

And, judging from the way some of the drivers speed by pedestrians on the beach and even the wild horses, all gives EOD reason to say..."Sock it to'em".

Frankly, when this area of the Outer Banks fills up, it makes The Point down on Hatteras Island look like a Vienna waltz, even when the big drum are running.

If the Hatteras beaches were as developed as Corolla they would look just as bad. As a matter of fact 1 car for every 20 feet of beach is the proposed carrying capacity for the NPS beaches and double that for the ponts and spits. it will look as bad before long.

You've got to keep one thing in mind! This is State HWY 12 that they are stakeing their "so called baby on board signs". This is a road, and I know when i have to work up north I hate seeing the people that part their car mid beach, in the middle of the road, and try to take up the beach from there to the ocean. I'm sorry, I'm going to drive on the east side of them, they can cuss me out or give me the bird. Its not going to stop me from traveling. What is needed is someone moveing these people out of the way, then there would be no problem.

This is one horrid accident away from resolution. Too bad. Last time I went up that way years back the ATV's were running wild. One of our commissioners keeps ATV's at his property there and defends their use as transportation. Reminds me of seeing another commissioner riding his golf cart in a 45 mile zone (and he has to travel a 55 mile zone to get to the 45). Meanwhile, the deputies are busy making hay.

I was told the "rules of the road" are people need to park in the middle of the beach, north-bound traffic is on the east side of the parked cars, and south-bound traffic is on the west side of the parked cars. What do Carova officials say are the "rules of the road"?

Do they have turtle nests up there? In Hatteras, 50 to 55 days after eggs are laid there is a total beach closure from the nest to the water. If the nest is on the dune, then the beach is closed until the nest hatches. September 15th all un-hatched nests are closed to the ocean. Last year one nest never hatched. It was November when they removed the closure.

Concerning the 4:38 posting... The reason the turtle nests don't matter up there is that that is where the "fat cats" from Washington DC go to vacation. The poor working stiffs can't afford to go to Corolla / Carova! They don't care... they've got theirs!

PERMITS will keep the speeding, law-scoffing day-trippers off the beaches.
