Civics 101

With so much talk around the county lately about the retirement of Senator Marc Basnight from the state legislature and the upcoming announcement, at the end of this month, of his replacement, EyeonDare thought it would be fun to give its readers a simple civics test.  OK? Hey, you don't have to tell anyone your score.

Question:

How many of these Dare County names do you recognize?
Award your yourself five points if you are familiar with the person's name and ten points if you know the name and are acquainted with the person.  OK?
Total possible score is 100 points.

(1) Kathy McCullough-Testa
(2) Tommy Fulcher
(3) Darrell Collins
(4) Alex Baer
(5) Christine Young
(6) Susan Pope
(7) Susan-Harmon Scott
(8) Anna Elizabeth Morey
(9) Frank Dale Draper
(10) Chris Hardee

OK...take the test....and if you scored:

100 points --- You are a sure fire "yella dog democrat".
90 points  ---- You voted for Obama
80 points ----- You are not a Outer Banks native
70 points  ---- You live north of KH
60 points  -----You live between Nags Head & KDH
50 points ----- You live on Hatteras Island, Roanoke Island, or the mainland
40 points ----- You are an Unaffiliated voter
30 points ----- You rarely vote
20 points ----- You never vote
 10 points------ You don't give a damn
   0 points------ You're a Republican

Answers to Quiz:

The first seven people listed are the current officers of the Dare County Democratic Party. Number eight and number nine, above, are the two delegates who will cast Dare County's votes for Senator Basnight's replacement later this month, along with delegates from the other seven counties in District I. (Beaufort, Washington, Tyrrell, Hyde, Dare, Currituck, Camden, Pasquotank).

Oddly, both Morey and Draper reside in Southern Shores, NC, which is considered by many Outer Banks residents to be a Republican stronghold. And, even more ironic is the fact, that, according to state voter registrations records, neither Morey or Draper were Dare County voters 10 or 12 years ago.  All of which proves one thing, (1) politics is changing in Dare County, slowly; and, reinforces another, (2) that being, that politics makes strange bedfellows.

Number 10 on the list is a former or current (EOD doesn't know either) Grand Pooh Pah of the local Democratic Party and 3rd District Grand Dragon (or something like that) of the State Democratic Party.

If you haven't guessed it by now, EOD didn't score 100 on the test either.

That is what's so good about being an Unaffiliated voter these days.

Hi, EOD. I realize this may not be how you intended the civics quiz, but it is possible to know several of the folks on the list without being a Democrat, registered or unregistered. :-)

I scored a 35 myself, but not due to involvement in any political forum, and I always vote. After all, I want the right to complain about the results, regardless of who wins or loses. ;-)

I knew who Susan Harmon Scott was only because she handled a divorce for a girlfriend years ago.....:-)

Hey Ray, Care to educate the masses on how exactly "Uncle Marc's" replacement will be determined?

This is somewhat off the subject, though tied to it------has EOD ever gotten an answer from Basnight as to his rationale for exempting his residence of Manteo from the bag ban? As I've stated before, this smacks of arrogance, but, maybe I'm missing something?????

Scored 100! woohoo!!

Well, looks like EOD doesn't want to provide input to my Basnight Manteo bag exemption question-----maybe he's on vacation!

JohnR,
As EOD has stated before, this blog is dedicated primarily to county government(s). And it's getting to be a full time job.
Here's a couple of suggestions:
(1) email Sen. Basnight and ask him yourself. :)
(2) email one of your county commissioners and ask them to contact him. :)
(3) drive over to Manteo and knock on his door and ask him if he has any plastic bags he doesn't need. If he gives you any, please share them with us.
(4) drop off about ten cats in his yard and he'll be sure to go out looking for plastic bags. Then, follow him and ask him all the questions you want. ;):)
(5) Report back here.

HAHAHA, Mr. Ray, your suggestion to Johnr is hilarious. Love it!

YES, SIR! I will!-----Seriously, I thought maybe at some point you had asked him yourself, because, I know you didn't like the bag ban in general, and, as much as you like to "tweak" and delve, also conjectured that you had posed the Manteo exemption fiasco to him----

Since you mentioned it, I am considering dropping off some spare cats, though-----at your house! Happy day, Ray! Finally, an Auditor with a sense of humor!!!
