Bike-path plan in Dare County picks up speed HamptonRoads.com PilotOnline.com

NCDOT says this project could cost as much as $37 million.  That's one million more than the $36 million beach nourishment project in Nags Head.  Now, if Warren Judge and his board of commissioners would fight as hard for this project as they did for nourishment and beach access on Hatteras Island, we might see some results. However, don't hold your breath.

There's got to be a way to do pieces and parts, starting now. The curve around the Methodist Church was supposed to start last August. Haven't seen anything yet.

My understanding is that one of the principal hang-ups for NCDOT is that the bridges are not wide enough to add a lane for cyclists and pedestrians.
So what! If a multi-use path can be built along 95+% of Colington Road omitting the bridges, isn't that better than no path at all?
There is another issue that seems to be ignored in the entire debate about facilitating cycle and pedestrian travel, however: Why should it be assumed that motor vehicle drivers have some inalienable right to supremacy on the public roadways? Maybe the concept of "Share the Road" ought to be strictly enforced and not merely on signage as a feel-good slogan.
