| Dare County Landfill |
The reason is, the county has chosen to use universal Caterpillar Locks on all the gates at the landfill and the same key that fits all the gate locks also fits all of the heavy equipment inside the compound.
"Anyone who has one of these keys can access the property and operate the equipment without any difficulty", said one source. If you own a piece of Caterpillar equipment, your key probably matches all the county owned keys. If not, EOD finds that they are readily availabe on Ebay for less than $5.00.
Is this a good idea? You decide. EyeonDare just read a press release/crime report that says over 150 local motor vehicles were broken into over the Thanksgiving Holidays, right here in Dare County.
Perhaps it's time the county changes all of its locks and charged the costs to the county commissioners' discretionary travel expense funds. That should keep them at home and out of the expensive hotels and steakhouses for a while. Maybe.

That was no hunt. I hunt, and that wasn't one.
That was no different or sportsmanlike than me going over to Feline Hope with a .22, walk into the pen, and begin shooting cats.
Mike Johnson proved he was a liar with the money he tried to steal. Now he's proven he's a snake. People really want this guy around their kids? Not mine, not ever.
It's a matter of hours before Outer Banks Voice runs a story about how this is all legit, and that Russ has been working on the piece for weeks, and didn't get his lead from you.
lol...I guess if you go anywhere hutning on the main land you could consider that walking into Feline Hope. Do you have any idea the bear population over there? The deer too? It is overwhelming. There are more bear and deer in people's yards that have ever been seen by the locals. Just saying...
Facts guys...facts... I go to this landfill many times a week for work. They are very serious about the work they do and they have many different types of equipment in use. Including John Deer and other equipment. Once again EYE ON DARE is up to its half truths and mis-information. Is there a case out there where any equipment has been stolen in Dare? Of course now there may be since you found it necessary to put it out there how it can stolen and where. The media is so responsible for a lot of what is wrong with this world. You give ideas to the crazy people. Thank you very much.
EOD you are too old and wise to give into bullying.
The personal attacks on you are a result of you exposing another dare county scandal.
Thank you for having the balls to speak out.
Keep up the good work.
The BS has been going on long enough.
Well, John...so you think that because of this blogpost, the county commissioners will have five armed deputies sitting on the landfill all night long to keep thieves from stealing the equipment? Well, if Mike Johnson hadn't shot all the bears, the county wouldn't need any locks in the first place. Do you remember the old song...."There ain't no bears out tonight, cause Granddad killed them all last night"....Well glory be...GrandDad must be Mike Johnson!!
I don't think it's the equipment that will be stolen, it's the METAL.
If you are going to call someone a liar, thief and snake be a man and put your name to it. I think they all need to be replaced for all their waste of you tax dollors and refusing to listen to the will of the people. (Phillip Etheridge)
Good think you let everyone know how to steal all the equipment... Someone is going to have a nice Christmas.
EOD has no qualms whatsoever giving out this information. If it's good enough for Com. Mike Johnson, its good enough for everyone else. County officials's responsibility to protect public property comes before yours and mine. By the way, EOD visited the landfill before noon today and saw no one at the entrance office, no equipment working, except one employee weed eating grass (he said it was his first week on the job) and saw no heavy equipment working anywhere....So, maybe someone stole all the equipment last night or maybe it's just because it's Friday... :) :)
You all make a big deal out of this key ordeal, all equipment is this way. With a simple older style chevy key one could start many different types including but not limited to some freightliner dumptrucks, front end loaders etc... It is obvious to me that most of you have never run equipment for a living nor do you realize the benefits of only having to carry three or four keys to start eight or ten pieces of equipment. Its not just the countys equipment its all equipment, thats why they have serial numbers, Caterpillar is probably the best about maintaining a record of serial numbers because eventually you will break something that you have to fix and if your machine is stolen this is when it will become obvious. As to the lock, lets be realistic guys, if you are determined to get in a padlock isn't going to stop you regardless, a good pair of bolt cutters and your in, all padlocks do is keep honest people honest, just like car door locks or deadbolts on full and half lite glass doors.
Dont care about keys. Do care about using county property for a program that should NEVER have been run on county property.
If I went out there and used a piece of equipment, I would get arrested.
If I was hunting out there, I would get arrested.
