Do you think this child fully understood the ramifications of what he just did?
This film (not shot in Dare County) was produced by the CTO organization of which Comissioner Mike Johnson is a NC State Director. Perhaps it will help readers better understand the ramifications of Johnson's youth bear hunts on the Dare County landfill property.
Dare Commissioner Mike Johnson is seen
here giving a thumbs up after a bear kill
on the Dare County landfill property.
Johnson's youth hunting on the landfill
has recently been turned over to the
Dare County Parks & Rec. Dept. with
Johnson serving as an advisor. Youth as
young as 10 years old have been led onto
the posted (no firearms allow) site to
shoot bear that ramble around the landfill.

Perhaps a little more respect for the life of the animal they just took. A little less celebrating and focus on the harvest and use of the entire animal for consumption, which should have been part of the touching moment of prayer.
To say that the father's reaction was obnoxious would be an understatement. Note his remark that this was the first time his son had ever fired a rifle. How's that for teaching gun safety. Follow the video carefully and it's easy to see that the son's prayer was prompted and orchestrated. Also note the boy's bewildered look after he fired the shot and his father removed the gun from his hands. If this was meant to be a propaganda video for a father/son Christian hunt, it failed miserably. But that's just my opinion and another reason I think Mike Johnson's youth bear hunts are so sickening and not representative of what one should want in the way of teaching young people the value (if any) of the sport. JMO.
After watching this video for about the fifth time I realized that the person holding this child and steadying the gun was not his father. His father was just standing there watching. Also listen closely and you will see and hear the man holding the child in his lap reach over and click the gun safety off before telling the boy to shoot. How can that boy's father be proud of this so-called precious moment when he chose to stand there and watch his son shoot an animal that was clearly not afraid of the cameraman, boy, father and guide who were standing out in the open talking. This is hunting???? This is what Mike Johnson calls hunting? and teaching kids??
I agree I watched it again and It is a sickening example of how not to teach kids about guns and hunting. This was not a hunt, it was no different than going out to a pasture and shooting cattle. Mike Johnson's killing of bears at the landfill was no different. Those bears were so tame you could walk right up to them. My first hunt was after years of shooting and learning proper gun safety/handling from my father. My first kill was after days of freezing in a tree stand while waiting patiently for a deer to come to his scrape. All "true" sports require hard work, practice, training, patience, and perseverance - not a sucker punch hunt like the one depicted in this video. Rick - A Christian Hunter
Bet he will show back up at the dump for another self sanctioned, illegal hunt, even after he is out of office. AND will not be held accountable for his actions AGAIN. Thank God for blogs like this that may SHAME him out of his sense of arrogance and entitlement.
To be frank, it scares me somewhat also, especially as I read some of the religious accounts associated with this CTO organization and its founder. A book written by the founder, baptism of the youth by adult led hunters, open, field prayer before and after each hunt and kill, etc. is definitely what one might call the norm. I don't mean to attack anyone's religion, but the age and manner in which the CTO is going after these kids raises my eyebrows. Just my opinion, which is worth about two cents.
PEOPLE... ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!! I'm so over this. Men have been hunting since the stone age. These days, animals have more rights than we do, and we still have to pay the tax for it. My husband and son are avid hunters, as well as my father when he was alive and my brothers. It's part of a heritage and PEOPLE, it's time we start getting back to our roots and focus on the REAL things that are important in our lives.
I guess where your tax money goes is not important, I guess the fact that an elected goverment official using County(our) property for his "jollies" and having children dispatch bears on it, that is clearly posted "no firearms" is not a problem. And I guess you are over the fact that firearms and ammunition was purchased with our money, last understood they are not accountable, without taxpayer knowledge or permission. Meanwhile, the BOC sits silent before tossing this liability mess into the lap of another agency. What has to happen before you object??

Johnson's "religion" escapes the living HELL out of me, personally.

That guy from CTO is no longer with the organization...
